Description of the works

The removal of the non-notifiable asbestos, demolition and site clearance of Oldham Sports Centre: the main building, sports hall, main, learner and diving pools including basement / plant rooms.
he works comprised of the demolition of existing buildings including:

  • Asbestos removal works
  • Soft stripping
  • Demolition of the building structures
  • Breaking out existing foundations and hard standings
  • Site finish

Soft strip and demolish all buildings, break out all hard-standings, ground foundations/substructures, basements, pool cavities, ducts and retaining structures. Retaining walls adjacent to the public footpath/highway and adjacent car park had to be retained.

Where applicable, all basements, pool cavities were backfilled using the material arising from the demolition, which was processed and crushed on site. The crushed 6F2 material was deposited in 300m layers, each layer compacted solid.

The whole area of the cleared site inclusive of the areas where the trees had to be removed was graded. The graded area (approximately 5200m²) was covered with class 2 general purpose type topsoil 150mm depth. A timber knee was erected around certain areas of the cleared site. On completion of the works, approximately 7 linear metres of edge kerb with a 50mm face had to be laid, using the existing edge kerbs from site, where the two areas of footpaths had to be been taken up adjacent to the public car park.

Nature of the Project

Oldham Sports Centre-The original building was constructed in the early 1970’s as a purpose built sports and leisure centre. The rear main sports hall was fire damaged in the 1990’s and that section was demolished and re-built re-opening in 1998. In the main the building was constructed with brick, block, structural steel and reinforced concrete.
